TV on Tuesday: How to Make a Splash in Social Media

Amanda Cey | December 29, 2009

Welcome to our first installment of TV on Tuesday, where we bring you our favorite clips from around the web.  They could be funny, they could informative, they could be irreverent or simply irrelevant…but every Tuesday, they’ll be here, waiting for you to click and view.  Today, we bring you Alexis Ohanian, the founder of Reddit, as he gives a Ted Talk on the naming of Mister Splashy Pants.  While this talk is certainly humorous (and how could a talk about Mister Splashy Pants not be?), at its heart is a message about how social media changes how we process information.  When using the web to convey the message, we are essentially setting it free; we are relinquishing the control that newspapers, television and other, older forms of information conveyance have both used and relied on for years.  So, without further adieu, we set this clip free and bring you:  How to Make a Splash in Social Media, with Alexis Ohanian and, of course, Mister Splashy Pants.

Razorfish Holiday Party

Amanda Cey | December 21, 2009

On December 10, ABCey Events helped Razorfish celebrate the holidays with a casino themed party at Mighty.  Razorfish is one of the world’s largest interactive agencies, providing services to its clients in the realms of digital advertising and content creation, media buying, strategic counsel, analytics, technology and user experience.  Their clients include Mercedes, AT&T, Capital One, Adidas, Kraft and many, many more. At Mighty, Razorfish’s employees gambled the night away on five casino tables, playing craps, roulette, blackjack and poker as they sipped on champagne and snacked on mini burgers from the tri-variety sliders bar.  DJ David Carvalho pleased the crowd with an accumulation of electronic, mash-up, reggae, funk, soul, hip-hop, and had guests dancing all night long!

The big winner of the night took home a Wii Fit, while the runners up walked away with an iPod and a Kindle.  We could tell you more, but why do that when we could just show you?  Thus, we bring you ABCey’s first foray into the world of film:

Twitter Bigger Than Barack?

Amanda Cey | December 3, 2009

According to the Global Language Monitor, it is. Their recently conducted poll for the most used words of 2009 put Twitter as the number one word of the year, followed by Barack Obama and H1N1. What I find striking is the contrast between the big and the little. When people say the president’s name, they generally say it in reference to large scale issues: healthcare, national security, taxes – things that affect us not only now, but for years to come. Swine flu is an international epidemic. Yet Twitter is used for the super short term: the latest breaking news, a sale or special that will only last 2 hours, a joke that is momentarily amusing. Have we experienced a paradigm shift, where the little has captured our attention more than the big, or are we simply tweeting away to distract ourselves from the larger woes of the world? What do you think accounts for the mega success of Twitter? Is it a passing trend or here to stay?
