Friends! This Thursday, October 27th we have a really special event for you. Rise2Shine & Marilyn’s Mission is collaborating to bring their 1st Annual MONSTER MASH @ MARS Fundraiser to help alleviate the suffering of young underprivileged children, locally and in Haiti. Our local favorite Superstar DJ’s Clarkie and Dirtyhertz will be gracing the decks & providing us with some great tunes for the eve! The event will be held at Mars Bar, SF located at 798 Brannan St and will run from 9:00pm-1:00am. Costumes are optional and there will be some other fun stuff in store including a Raffle & great prizes! For more information and to RSVP, you can visit the Facebook Event Page.

Marilyn’s Mission has been supplying household necessities to children and families in need for 13 years. They work in conjunction with Holy Family Day Home, a day care center for homeless and low income children, and many other charitable organizations. Many people want to be charitable around the holidays, but the people who need it most, are in continuous need. Marilyn’s mission strives to supply all year round.

Rise2Shine (R2S) is a 501(c)(3) Non-Profit organization established to help alleviate the suffering of young children living in impoverished developing countries worldwide, with a current focus on Haiti. R2S concentrates on helping the forgotten children, those children from six months to five years of age. These children live in abject poverty and are too young to attend public school, resulting in minimal access to essential food and educational services. They are super excited to finally announce the grand opening of their flagship location in Fond-Parisien, Haiti on 11-11-11 (only 2wks after this fundraiser).

With your help, we can all make this possible. To ensure a better future for our children, please RSVP today and come out and show your support! Suggested donation $15! They are led by a team of industry veterans, possessing decades of experience in the building design, construction, acquisition, development and operations processes.

We worked closely with Craig Severance, one of the founders who is in responsible for the company’s sales and marketing. Craig has over 25 years of experience in real estate acquisitions and financing, and was an early pioneer in utilizing technology to expedite these processes. Prior to founding Intermodal Structures, Craig co-founded and served as CEO of RealConnected, which developed collaborative, project management software for the commercial real estate industry. Craig also served as a managing director and head of acquisitions at AMB Property Corporation (NYSE: AMB), where his group completed over $3 billion in acquisitions.

Intermodal succesfully hosted 25 investors from all over the world who dined on delicious food from the acclaimed Hugh Grohman and his well known catering company, Greenleaf Platters. Guests also enjoyed breath taking views of the Bay and looked as if they were talking some serious business! We were happy to be a part of this important event, and can’t say enough about this uber cool, enviornmentally friendly, energy efficient, and technologically advanced company.
Today’s TV on Tuesday is a TED Talk by James Surowiecki, finance writer for the New Yorker and author of The Wisdom of the Crowds. He pinpoints the moments that social media became as relevant and informational as traditional news (such as the 2005 tsunami or the Haitian and Chilean earthquakes) and how it may even trump traditional media in its ability to preserve personal stories in their most direct form. How do you get your news these days? Is it from social media (tweets, Facebook updates, and the like) or more traditional sources (such as the New York Times)?

By now, everyone’s heard about the devastating earthquake in Haiti: as we write this, over 100,000 are feared dead. We posted on Tuesday about how social media can save lives, and suddenly, we’re given the opportunity to witness it in action. According to CNN, a fundraising campaign done solely through text messages and networking sites like Twitter and Facebook has raised more than $3 million for the Red Cross’s relief work in Haiti. Mass text messages went out on various carriers last night, urging users to text “HAITI” to 90999 in order to donate $10 to the relief effort, to be added to their phone bill at the end of the month. IPhone developer Justin Williams jumpstarted the idea of Mac and IPhone developers decided to donate a day’s worth of sales to Haitian relief efforts. He tweeted his idea, blogged about it, and got a bunch of developers behind him. The result? IndieRelief, where companies and individual developers can choose an organization for a day’s worth of sales to go to.

The crisis in Haiti is heartbreaking, but it’s wonderful to see the tools we use to talk about our lives and promote our business to be used to spread widespread good in this way. With the types of social networks we have in place worldwide, it hardly takes any effort to mobilize millions of people, and that’s an amazing thing.

For more information and updates on Haiti, click here.

As more evidence of the reach of social media, we leave you with some TwitPics of Haiti, taken by @CarelPedre and @MarvinAdy. And if you have any more information on relief efforts through social media or otherwise, please share!
